On My Vacation

I had the pleasure, recently, of vacationing in the town in which I grew up. Olympia, Washington looks much the same as it did when I moved away some 30 years ago. As I was wondering around town grokking the memories, I came across this statue of former Washington Governor John Rodgers.

I must have seen this statue hundreds of thousands of times as I grew up. But then I had no appreciation of the last four lines chiseled into the granite. In fact I had no memory of them as I gazed at them last month.

I guess it took the Bush administration to make me understand just why Governor Rodgers liked that line. Sure jumps out at you, doesn't it?
